An RCBO is an electrical safety device that combines the functions of a residual current device (RCD) and a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) in a single unit.
The RCBO is designed to protect against two types of electrical faults: overcurrent and residual current faults. Overcurrent faults occur when there is an excessive current flow in the circuit, typically caused by a short circuit or an overload. Residual current faults occur when there is a leakage of current from the circuit to the earth, which can be caused by a faulty appliance or wiring.
The RCBO works by monitoring the current flowing through the circuit and disconnecting the power if it detects an overcurrent or a residual current fault. The device has a built-in trip mechanism that activates when the current exceeds a preset level, typically 30mA for a residual current fault and the rated current of the device for an overcurrent fault.
RCBOs are commonly used in residential and commercial electrical installations to provide enhanced protection against electrical shocks and fires. They are typically installed in the distribution board or consumer unit and can be used to protect individual circuits or groups of circuits and are typically installed in the distribution board or consumer unit.
